Director’s Note
Throughout middle and high school, I developed a passion for social action and pursued an interest in filmmaking. My decision to direct this documentary about the Arlington Academy of Hope was motivated by my belief that a documentary can shape perspectives and bring about great good.
AAH’s story is remarkable. It is a story that stems from the challenges of Sub-Saharan Africa, reveals the necessity of education, and embodies the potential strength of America-Africa partnerships.
From One Village is the story of three young people and their families – their challenges, hopes, and dreams – and the difference one school is making.
It’s the story of Mutsaka Rojus, a boy whose education was inadequate, now a young man whose life of subsistence farming is no better than that of his parents.
It’s the story of Wandeba Brian Weanga, the lucky student who was given an opportunity to learn, and whose determination and spirit will ensure that he fully realizes his potential.
And it’s the story of Nabulo Rachel, a girl whose life was changed quite clearly, and who now cannot wait to change the lives of the next generation of Ugandan schoolchildren.
All the wonderful experiences and challenges of this documentary production have risen out of a quest to tell this story. Creating From One Village has been an amazing experience for me, and it is my deepest hope that its viewers will begin to understand the success, promise, and magic of the Arlington Academy of Hope.
