THE GREAT WORK OF OUR TEACHERS

Our students in Uganda have been writing essays as they continue learning remotely. We are happy to share their work. Please note student work is presented in its original content.

My name is Bwayilisa Mercy. I live with my father right behind Nusu hill. It is the tallest hill in our village. I love my home because of the beautiful environment surrounding us.

Before COVID 19 came, I used to wake up at 4.30am and leave home at 5.00am to be in time for school. I had to walk carefully to cross rivers and muddy paths to reach school.

When schools closed in March, our teachers gave us work to do from home. They promised that they would come to check on us. My home being at the farthest end, we rarely get visitors who can risky to climb the steep hill and go through the rivers and valleys to get there!

It was a surprise when teacher Godfrey visited me at home. I was happy to see him after a long period of time. He asked me how I was doing during the lockdown. He gave me some work to do and also encouraged me to maintain personal hygiene by washing my hands all the time.

Later, he requested me to direct him to other homes of REACH students. As he came down the hill, he accidently fell down and broke his arm. I stood there helplessly! From a distance, I called my father for help. He came running and immediately called school to take him to hospital. I thank God for my teacher’s quick recovery.

This accident taught me a lesson that I have to work hard at school and get a good job to fix our roads. In future i want also to build a clinic near our home to help people living behind the Nusu hill.

    Mercy,
Thank you for the informative essay. I’m glad you were there to help Tr. Godfrey when he fell. I’m also glad to hear that you are learning and practicing healthy habits. You are the future of Uganda and the world. Remember the ABCs of Success – Academics, Behavior, Character!

I have visited Uganda 4 times and walked to many homes in the mountains where you live. Indeed, Mt. Nusu is beautiful! Stay safe and healthy.
